Moss fruiting bodies

Cross-leaved Heath

The Yarrows and Warehouse environment is dominated by heather moorland. The drier areas are colonised be grasses sedges and Ling (calluna vulgaris) Cross-Leaved Heath (Erica Tetralix) and Bell Heather (Erica Cinarea). Wet areas are dominated by Sphagnum Moss which can form areas of raised bog which decay to fill hollows with deep peat which has the consistency and appearance of melted dark chocolate. The heathers also form peat but it is more fibrous and yellowish light brown.

This environment provides a habitat for many birds, mammals reptiles and insects. Notably game birds and their predators including the increasingly rare Hen Harrier.
